1ST ENGLISH SERVICE

THE FREEDOM OF FORGIVENESS
(The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant)

Matt 18:21-35
– A unique Matthean parable.
– Central theme = living in the kingdom.
– Jesus – parables (Greek – parabolē; Heb. mashaal – a more accommodative word).
– Jesus – “seventy-seven times” – reminding one of Lamech in Gen 4:24.
– The 2 amounts are hyperbolic – meant to highlight the absurdity of the man’s actions.

Two sobering takeaways
1. Forgiveness is a deadly serious matter – to God & to us.
– Forgiveness does not mean becoming a doormat – or to condone abuse – we need safe boundaries in the community.
– God has chosen to forgive us! Rom 5:1-11 – David Noel Freedman – “There is forgiveness” (cf. Psalm 130:3-4).

2. Only two possible options, and 2 outcomes:
– Jesus taught us to pray – Matt 6:12, 14-15
– We are called to be a sign of the kingdom – Gladys Staines – Nadine Collier.
– The other option to forgiveness is unthinkable. We either choose freedom or torment.
