12 Minutes Max is a curated monthly performance series, presented by the Salt Lake City Public Library, featuring new works and works-in-progress by local artists in many disciplines: dance, music, film, theater, writing, performance art and the like. Each event includes three varied performances, with a short Q&A after each piece. It is modeled after the program originated by On the Boards in Seattle.
The City Library will present a live stream version of 12 Minutes Max on Sunday, July 19, at 2pm. We will feature works by choreographer Halie Bahr, filmmaker Mikkel Richardson and musician Man Meets Bear. Following the presentation of each piece, we will host a live Q&A with each artist.
Halie Bahr will present FeelTime, a multimedia dance performance that explores the limits of technology and attempted togetherness. Spatial memory, video chat, and experiential participation are used to blur the rules of audience and performer. “FeelTime lovingly reminds us that even when together — disconnection is inherent.” This work originally premiered in June 2019, pre-coronavirus, in Minneapolis, MN and since has been performed in Salt Lake City and El Paso, TX. Halie is a dance artist currently living in Salt Lake City. She presents dances across the country, and has performed internationally. She is currently a MFA candidate and teaches within the School of Dance at the University of Utah. haliebahr.org
Filmmaker Mikkel Richardson will present IAM, a film that was part of the Identity Project by Joshua Samson displayed at the UMOCA in October of 2018. The Identity Project set out to explore individual identity as portrayed by a collection of local filmmakers. IAM was made to reflect the illusive nature of identity: “Always shifting and warping with an individual’s role at any given moment in time”. Mikkel has worked in the film industry since high school; working on larger commercial and feature films as a focus puller in order to fuel his self directed passion projects. His most recent short film, Keepsake, is expected to release in the Fall of 2020.
Man meets Bear is a Logan-based musician and scientist who studies the ecology of lakes. His songs and albums use a range of styles, including elements of folk, experimental drone, and noise, to describe places, usually as ecosystems. For 12MM, he will be performing a set of new unreleased pieces, including work from his upcoming album, Songs from the Hive.
