Indonesië is het land waar mijn moeder leefde, voordat ze zich eind jaren negentig samen met mijn Nederlandse vader in België vestigde en er op het raakvlak van deze culturen haar drie kinderen ter wereld bracht.
De mooie, maar ook moeilijke aspecten van die transculturele opvoeding vormden de voorbije jaren al een belangrijk thema in mijn fotografische en filmische werk als studente Fotografie aan LUCA School of Arts Brussel. Nu wil ik samen met mijn oudere zus Eva voor het eerst individueel terugkeren naar ons ‘moederland’ om de Oosterse achtergrond met onze Westerse persoonlijke levens te verbinden.
Ik zal deze maandlange reis naar West-Java documenteren, wat zal uitmonden in mijn afstudeerproject. De documentaire brengt enerzijds onze familiale afkomst in beeld, anderzijds ligt er een grote focus op geluid en klank. Muziek vormt namelijk een tweede thema binnen deze film.
Sinds kort schrijven we samen Javaans geïnspireerde muziek met Nederlandstalig teksten, waarmee we onze culturele dualiteit benaderen. Onze reis zal de gelegenheid vormen om onze demo’s met traditionele instrumenten in Jakarta op te nemen. Deze nummers zullen nakomend resulteren in de release van een eerste EP.

Indonesia is the country where my mother lived before she and my Dutch father settled in Belgium in the late nineties and gave birth to her three children at the intersection of these cultures.
The beautiful but also difficult aspects of that transcultural parenting have already been an important theme in my photographic and cinematic work as a Photography student at LUCA School of Arts Brussels. Now, together with my older sister Eva, I want to return individually for the first time to our ‘motherland’ to connect the Eastern background with our Western personal lives.
I will document this month-long trip to West Java, which will result in my graduation project. On the one hand, the documentary portrays our family origins; on the other, there is a big focus on sound. In fact, music forms a second theme within this film.
We recently started writing Javanese-inspired music together with Dutch lyrics, as an approach to our cultural duality. Our trip will be the opportunity to record our demos with traditional instruments in Jakarta. Afterwards, these songs will result in the release of a first EP.
