ANZ Stadium, … Bledisloe Cup 2020. Badge of all blacks. Yeah, all Blacks. Australia, VS. Sun, Oct 11th. A bold plan has been proposed that would resolve the ugly scheduling conflict between Rugby Australia and New Zealand Rugby and allow the All Blacks to return to their families in time for Christmas.
But it could come at a cost for the Kiwis.

The Rugby Championship, set to take place as six double-headers from November 7 to December 12, has ignited fierce debate between Australia and New Zealand over the scheduling, after NZR claimed it had not approved a plan for the All Blacks to face the Wallabies on the final date of the tournament.

Under current New Zealand restrictions, returning home after a December 12 clash would force players and coaching staff into quarantine that would keep them apart from families on Christmas Day.

Now the Sydney Morning Herald claims there has been a proposal to reschedule that match to Saturday, October 31 – one week before the four-team tournament between the Wallabies, All Blacks, Springboks and Pumas was due to begin.

With the Bledisloe Cup beginning this Sunday 11th in Wellington and followed by a second clash at Eden Park on October 18, the only way the plan could go ahead is under reduced quarantine restrictions when both teams travel to Australia.

Without a ‘travel bubble’ between the countries, the teams would still be in quarantine until November, ruling out the earlier date.

All Blacks coach Ian Foster said his side would happily play on the earlier date if NSW’s travel restrictions ease for New Zealand arrivals.

“We’re really conscious there’s been lots of variables at play with the draw and now we’ve established the certainty our second Bled(isloe Cup match) will be on Sunday the 18th, we will then be flying out the following Friday on the 23rd and preparing to play the first game of the Rugby Championship in Australia on November 7,” Foster told the NZ Herald.

“But with the quarantine news there’s no reason we couldn’t play a week before that.”
